The Role of A Foster Parent

Children have a right to a safe nurturing home environment, protection, support, love and understanding, healthcare, education, and justice. The children of our country are our greatest asset. Foster parents are committed to ensuring that the needs of children in care are met.

Foster parents play a vital role in enabling children placed in their care to become mature and responsible adults with healthy coping mechanisms and a strong sense of self. Fostering parents make a valuable contribution to our society. There are approximately 35,000 foster families throughout Canada who perform the important task of nurturing children.

Foster families in Canada are diverse, and their primary motivation is an interest in making a difference in the lives of children. The recruitment and retention of foster homes is an on-going challenge in all provinces and territories.

Foster parents work as part of a professional team towards the goal of family reunification.
